Oopps... Souldnt have done that

I have been away from home and my tools for nearly 4 months now so I guess I was a little too eager to finish off a couple of projects today. The sun was going down and I had one more razor to put together after this one.
I was pretty much finished this Blue Wonder but the blade was just closing a little off center. I know this was a STUPID thing to do and there are other ways of dealing with this, but in my haste to get the two razors finished I put the tang in my small vice and applied a little preassure. See picture...:dropjaw: :banghead:

At least there was no sentimental attachment to this one, and I had more luck with the other one, it used to be a Gotta 120, I'll post pics tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about that. I guess thats how we learn really..!

I mangled the edge on a razor cleaning it with a Dremel when I was rushing a bit. I guess thats the cardinal rule, never to be broken; Dont rush! Take your time and use small amounts of pressure and force.

So yeah, I wont be doing that again lol..! :D

But man, that sucks about that razor. Its a nice looker as well. Sorry to hear about it.

I did that to one that I had made about a month ago right after heat treatment & it broke about the same spot. Makes you sick doesn't it...

At least you have some nice scales for "standbye".

I thought I remembered that someone was using vises in this manner to straighten the tangs of Double Arrows or Gold Monkeys. Does this ring a bell with anyone else?

Yes you can use a vice to straighten a warp, it takes 3 rods, but it only works on the tang....
As Baldy's razor shows not all razors are made the same...

It is in the workshop sticky...


You can also use one to destroy a razor, same tool :mace:

I don't know about straightening the tang, but i've only tried this once. Maybe there was a stressed point at one of the jibbs. Probably 5-6 hours of work here too...:

I think it could have been...

Anybody who is "doing something", whether it's restoring, honing, or making WILL break something sometime. This is the second blade that I have personally broken, first was one that I was trying to get that final little bit of shine out of on a boker worked back & I had a bit of lapse in concentration...buffer snatched it from me and broke the blade. I was sick, but have trodded on as I hope the OP will...

Thistle Cut Co for me... Just had to take it back to the buffer one last time, to get just a "Touch" better... Wanna hear stupid ??? I actually took it out of the scales, after I had already honed and test shaved the razor,,, DUH!!!!! yep buffer caught the spine edge, and ZIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIng, ping zip zip ting..... pieces...

Taught me a valuable lesson, when they're done,,,, leave them be... :)

I knocked one off my bench last year but wasn't worried as I have a large rubber mat covering the floor. Of course the blade found a patch of bare concrete.. Murphy's Law again... Doh !

Once, while making some scales, I placed the intended blade on the bench top. I grabbed a file sitting right next to it...dragging the tool next to it, knocking the blade to the floor. Heard metal hitting concrete, looking down to see it broken.

I really doubt you could solder one back together without destroying the temper. One that is more broken on the tang than where the tang and blade join may be a possibility...

If about 1/2 the width of the blade could be firmly held under water it may be possible to braze, it shouldn't matter to much about tang losing some hardness. Alternativley you could make a tang from different material maybe from something like bone and bond or pin it to the blade.

If someone wants that one that I broke & will actually braze it or solder it together, they are welcomed to it at no cost, just shipping. Would love to see it go to work as I intended it to. I'm just not interested in trying to weld it. Kinda pushing the rules I know, but I'm not offering to sale.

There are wood carvers out there that look for straight razor blade for the express purpose of grinding them down to a carving knife. A mere fraction the size of a str8. Perhaps they would put it to very good use?

When you used the vice did you use the 3 rods???

What were the rods made of if you did????

I didn't use rods, but some scraps of the many exotic hardwoods I have around. My "spiderman" instincts kicked in warning me like a ten-thousandth of a second before I snapped it. I guess I knew I was going to snap it anyway considering that I remember checking and rechecking my safety glasses...just one of those dumb shop moments.

Sounds like a perfect candidate for someone who is looking to try str8s, but is unwilling to invest in one. With a newspaper strop they're good to go for a while. Kind of an ugly PIF charity case.

NO, that blade needs the hollow finished & a total polish, besides the broken tang. A lot of work left on it and definitely not for a beginner shaver. More for the likes of someone who wants to try their hand at making a razor for ideas & hollow grind practice.
